DYSTOPIA, PANOPTICON AND B ODY DISCIPLINE IN JAMES DASHNER?S THE MAZE RUNNER
The purpose of this research is to show about the issues which consist in The Maze Runner novel written by James Dashner. The issues that are consisted in science fiction novel such as Dystopia, Panopticon, and Body Discipline which are portrayed through the story, text and narration. This research is using narrative approach method based on Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan which is said that narrative method is based on three aspects such as story, text, and narration. This research attempts to give evidence how the issues such as Dystopia, Panopticon, and Body Discipline are portrayed through story, text and narration. Dystopia as a bad place is portrayed at the first when Thomas was sent to the Glade at the first, a place not suitable for living inside where the Gladers live separated from their family, even though the worst is, a half of their memories are lost at coming to the Glade. Panopticon is portrayed with a device named Beetle Blade where it works as surveillance device for the Gladers all day long nonstop. Beetle Blade itself except as a surveillance and monitoring device, it functioned as how CCTV which recorded video or audio. Body Dyscipline is portrayed in The Maze Runner novel as rules form which was made by the Gladers or a control that is used by Creators to the Gladers who got stung by the Grievers. The rules that was made by the Gladers is every newbie needs to spend his/her time for two weeks with Job Keepers for getting used to it in working and filtered based on every newbie?s skill to suit with the job. Furthermore, this research attempts to give evidence that there is a correlation between each issues which is include in science fiction novels. Based on the story in The Maze Runner novel and researcher?s analysis that those issues are obviously portrayed and have correlation to each other which cannot be released with science fiction novel.
